If everything has worked ok, you should be able to see your photos in the bottom half of the grey square.Īt the top of the grey square should be the iPhoto icon with a circle and a line across it (it looks deactivated), and an arrow to the left. Then click on the camera icon that you use to import still images. Give it time to completely open and show all your movie events & projects. Leave iPhoto and Terminal open, and open iMovie 9.0.9. Click on Update, and your images should appear in the iPhoto window (if you have hundreds of photos it might take a while). This opens a Terminal window, and also the iPhoto start window.Ī message should come up saying that the Library needs to be updated for this version of iPhoto.

In the Applications folder, Control-click on the iPhotos app (which will also have a grey circle with a line across), click on Show Package Contents, double-click on Contents, double-click on MacOS, double-click on iPhoto.

I then opened it the following way (a huge thank-you to Terrell Smith, whose post on Apshowed me how to open iPhoto with Terminal): I downloaded iPhoto 9.4.3 from the Apple site I went to the Applications folder, found the deactivated iPhoto app (it had a grey circle with a line across) dragged it into the Trash and emptied the Trash. I know it worked in Sierra 10.12.6, but I don't know if it will work in other operating systems. I've read on the discussions that lots of others had the same problem, and were forced to upgrade to the new iMovie 10, which I don't like as much as 9.0.9.īut I seem to have solved the problem for myself, and hopefully for others. When I upgraded to Sierra, it deactivated iPhoto and replaced it with the new Photos app, which meant that when I clicked on the camera symbol in iMovie to import a photo, there was nothing there – just a grey square. I've been using iMovie 9.0.9 on OSX Mountain Lion, and importing still images from iPhoto. I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch, early 2011.
